Every baseball and softball facility is different, but the highest priority for stadium padding is anywhere athletes have a realistic chance of colliding with a hard surface during play. As of January 1, 2027, NCAA softball facilities are required to have padding on all hard wood, brick or concrete surfaces along the sideline and home run fence lines. The padding must start no further than 1 foot off the ground and end at 6 feet high or the top of the fence line, whichever is shorter. Hard-surface backstops are covered separately, and have been required to be padded dugout to dugout under the same dimensional standard for several years—that requirement is not new and is not tied to the 2027 deadline. The NCAA Baseball Rules Committee recommends similar protective padding standards, though they are not currently mandatory. Do chain-link fences require padding? No. The NCAA does not require padding on chain-link fencing. The rules apply to hard surfaces—wood, concrete and brick—on fence lines and backstops.
